British Pub Week: Saturday 30th October – Saturday 6th November 2010
Who doesn’t love pubs? They are, without doubt, the finest and most iconic of our great British institutions. No other can match the pub for its historical, cultural and social importance. We want to protect our pubs, celebrate them and ensure they can continue to thrive. This is the sole aim of British Pub Week and I ask you to get behind it and show the nation how you love our pubs.
Throughout British Pub Week, (Saturday 30th October to Saturday 6th November), pubs across Britain will invite customers, old and new, to join them for special events, special offers and special experiences that only their local pub can provide.

The highlight of Saturday’s activities is the Celebrity Chef’s Cookery Theatre, situated on Main Street, where the impressive line-up of celebrity chefs along with incredible local talent will show festival-goers how to prepare original dishes with locally-sourced produce and top quality ingredients - live on stage.
The Celebrity Chef’s Cookery Theatre is complemented by plenty of other delicious diversions around the town including culinary masterclasses and children’s food workshops where budding chefs can learn the basics of nutrition and food preparation.
Ian Richards from SK Events, the event organisers said “ We are delighted to be welcoming Antony, Aldo and John to Cockermouth for the first Taste Cumbria Food Festival celebrations. Having great names at the festival such as these demonstrates the calibre of the region’s food and drink offer and our commitment in establishing a definitive food event for the region. We will be releasing the full programme of events online in early September but highlights can be found on the festival website www.tastecumbria.com which is continually updated in the lead up to this fantastic foodie weekend!”

SEE ANTONY'S CONTRIBUTION TO 2010 EUROPCAR GASTRO GUIDE!

"British restaurant food has improved tremendously in recent years, but roadside catering has lagged woefully behind. It’s hardly any wonder that so many motorists choose to go hungry rather than eat the mediocre, poor-value fare offered at most motorway restaurants.
The Guild of Food Writers, Britain’s leading organisation of writers and broadcasters on all matters relating to food, knows that we can eat better while travelling. Motorway catering may be the pits for pit stops, but outstanding food can be found with just a short detour from many main roads. That’s why we are delighted to work with Europcar, the largest car hire company in the UK on this Roadside Gastro Guide: 20 restaurants of high quality that motorists can enjoy by driving no more than 20 minutes from a main road.
The establishments here cover a fantastic range from roadside stands to stately homes. They swathe much of the country, and include both celebrated restaurants and little gems known largely to locals. I hope they convey the message that being in your car doesn’t mean giving up good food. You just need to know where to look – and our Roadside Gastro Guide is the perfect place to start."

Waitrose scoops top Brammy prize
“On 22 July, the Bramley Campaign hosted its annual Brammy Awards ceremony at The Ivy in London. Antony beat off stiff competition from a number of other chefs to be crowned “Best Bramley Media Chef”, which was one of ten categories in this year’s event. This accolade is just one of many Brammys previously awarded to Antony, which demonstrate his unfaltering support for the apple. With journalists, industry delegates and fellow winners all in attendance, the ceremony was a roaring success, which allowed the Bramley Campaign to reward those who have shown outstanding commitment to using and promoting the apple over the past year.”
Heston and Delia may be the new faces of Waitrose but it was Antony Worrall -Thompson who joined ‘the nation’s favourite supermarket’ in scooping a prestigious Brammy Award this week
Waitrose, Greencore and Cottage Delight are among the winners of the 17th annual Brammy Awards, with Colman’s wining the first ever consumer choice prize for its Bramley Apple Sauce.
Each year the Brammys recognise and reward excellence by retailers, manufacturers and foodservice companies in using and promoting Bramley apples.

Waitrose scooped the award for Best Bramley Retailer, based on its exceptional year-on-year sales figures. Waitrose was the clear winner after successfully attracting and maintaining new customers through launching a new polybag Bramley product in September, which encouraged consumers to buy more Bramleys per shopping trip. In addition to the instore activity, the Waitrose website provides inspiration and easy-to-follow instructions for customers on how to cook with Bramley apples, with 280 sweet and savoury Bramley apple recipes for customers to enjoy.
David Mitchell, Waitrose Fruit Buyer, said: ‘“We have worked hard this year to champion the Bramley and we are delighted to have been able to introduce more of our customers to this iconic variety. Since releasing a new bag of Bramleys onto our shelves last autumn, we have aimed to inspire and educate customers with a host of different recipe ideas to try on the pages of our website. We also have more exciting plans already in place for the coming Autumn. As a retailer, we are proud to sell such a great British product and we are really pleased that our support for the Bramley has been recognised in this way."
For the first time this year the campaign invited consumers to nominate and vote for their favourite Bramley apple products. The winning consumers’ choice was Colman’s Bramley Apple Sauce, which was chosen for its excellent taste and consistency.
The Brammy Award winners in the manufacturer categories were chosen for their high quality and innovative Bramley apple products. The Best Manufacturer of a Sweet Bramley Product is Greencore Cakes & Desserts, for its Sainsbury’s Bramley Apple Pie. The Best Manufacturer of a Savoury Bramley Product is Waitrose for its English Pork & Bramley Apple Sausages, with the Brammy for Best Manufacturer of a Bramley Sauce being awarded for the second year running to Cottage Delight.
The Chairman’s Award was awarded to Reynolds Catering for the company’s record year with Bramleys. Reynolds Catering put significant marketing and sales effort behind Bramleys, including featuring a “Meet the Grower” article that was mailed out to 4,000 customers as well as developing recipes and training customers on how to cook with Bramleys. The company’s extensive promotional and sales activity saw year-on-year sales of Bramley double in volume.
Adrian Barlow, Chairman of the Bramley Apple Campaign, said:“The standard of entrants this year was the best ever and it made the final judging very interesting indeed. This has been an exceptional year for the Bramley and we have seen a significant increase in sales of fresh product. All the winners have recognised the Bramley’s exceptional qualities as our premier cooking apple and demonstrate excellence in their particular fields.”
Antony Worrall T-Thompson said:“I have to say how delighted I am to receive the award for this year's Best Bramley Media Chef. I'm gathering quite an orchard of Bramley awards, and this is greatly appreciated. The Bramley apple is one of my best-loved ingredients and deserves to be part of our recipes, and part of our heritage. Long live the Bramley!"

Charity celebrates 200,000 hens!
Corks popped at Devon-based charity the British Hen Welfare Trust as its 200,000th hen was re-homed on Saturday. Founded in 2005, the charity has since found homes for over 200,000 ex-battery hens which were otherwise destined for slaughter.

Aptly named ‘Fizz’, the 200,000th lucky hen has been re-homed to 8 year old hen-enthusiast Sam Bradley from Ivybridge near Plymouth. Sam, who wants to be a farmer when he grows up, has been interested in chickens from an early age – he saved up his 6th birthday money to buy rescue hens from the British Hen Welfare Trust and has been hen-mad ever since.
Sam said: “I really love chickens. I collect their eggs every day when I come home from school. Their favourite food is spaghetti, sweetcorn and worms. If it wasn’t for the charity, the chickens would be killed.”
Jane Howorth, Chief Executive of the British Hen Welfare Trust said: ‘Rehoming 200,000 commercial laying hens like Fizz is a big milestone for the charity and a great achievement. But it’s the tip of the iceberg... in the UK, there are some 16 million battery hens kept in cages where they cannot perform natural behaviours such as scratching, stretching their wings or nesting, and they have no access to sunlight, fresh air or grass.’
She continued: ‘It’s increasingly clear that consumers will pay a little extra for free range products and we encourage support for British free range farmers. Less clear is the fact that a high percentage of eggs from caged hens are often hidden in food such as ice-cream, ready meals and cakes. Reading food labels and only choosing free range can make a big difference to the quality of life for hens like Fizz.”
Under Sam’s loving care, Fizz is now happily settled in to her new retirement home and is enjoying her new found freedom. Apart from enjoying the free-range fun in Sam’s garden, she is already laying delicious eggs for the family to enjoy!

Sam Bradley, age 8, with ‘Fizz’Antony at Street Food Awards 2009
Every day, citizens of the world flock to their favourite pavement vendors for affordable sustenance. Some of the best food in New York, Tokyo and Ho Chi Minh City is served on the street. But vendors on British streets don’t have a reputation like that.
The food journalist and broadcaster Richard Johnson is trying to change all that – and he’s recruited Antony, Mark Hix, Marco Pierre White and Thomasina Miers to help.
The British Street Food Awards – www.britishstreetfood.co.uk September 9-12 – will recognise the best of the 10,000 people selling their wares on the streets of Britain. There are now thousands of mobilers (as street sellers are known) producing restaurant-quality food at supermarket prices. And they are all characters. Men and women who have learnt to make their living on the streets. Who love food, but don’t have enough money to open a restaurant of their own.

And they are all entering the British Street Food Awards. There’s Petra, a professional chocolatier who sells everything from Jimmy, a Mr Whippy Van, that she bought (sight unseen) from ebay.
There’s Michael and Crisp Hut, a facility offering gourmet deli crisps cooked on demand and served ‘hot in the hand’ in Swansea. And there’s Roland, who was the first to use a classic American Airstream trailer. He’s customized the wonderful silver machine, and it now produces great Mexican food. Come and see Antony and the judges at the grand cook-off in Ludlow on Sunday 12th September. It isn’t a white tie event. It’s white apron. And – just maybe – it will start a revolution in the way we eat.

World Ocean’s Day Story
World Ocean’s Day on 8th June 2010 is an opportunity to celebrate our world’s oceans and our personal connections to the sea. The world's oceans do so much for life on earth by generating most of the oxygen we breathe, helping feed us, regulating our climate, cleaning the water we drink, offering us a pharmacopoeia of potential medicines and providing limitless inspiration.
Read More click to expand/contract
World Ocean’s Day is our chance to help support the oceans at a time when they are threatened by over-fishing, pirate fishing, climate change, pollution and environmental disasters such as the recent oil disaster off the coast of Mexico. Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing - or ‘pirate fishing’ - is one of the greatest threats to the marine environment.
Pirate fishing operations are stealing from our seas and oceans, undermining attempts at sustainable fisheries management, causing massive damage to marine ecosystems and depriving poor coastal communities of their livelihoods and food security. The UK Government estimates that IUU fishing costs countries across Sub-Saharan Africa almost a billion dollars a year in lost revenue.
It’s also bad news for legitimate fishermen as fish caught by both IUU and legitimate fishers are sold on the same markets but only legitimate fishers pay the higher operating costs from supporting fisheries and conservation measures.
I support the Environmental Justice Foundation’s (EJF) campaign to close the loopholes that help facilitate pirate fishing and empower those affected to enforce regulations. EJF is working to end the use of Flags of Convenience for fisheries vessels, close Ports of Convenience such as Las Palmas, provide grassroots organisations with video and advocacy training, and secure support to the governments of developing countries, particularly in West Africa, to enable them to eradicate pirate fishing in their waters.
Please join me on World Ocean's Day by getting involved with EJF’s campaign to Save the Sea (url shortened) ejfoundation.org

The magazine is encouraging its readers to get cooking and have fun by hosting a World Cup Feast fundraiser for friends and family.
By gathering a group together over food, hopefully some great football and inviting guests to donate to Bobby Moore Cancer Research UK, the aim is to raise money for the charity.
Founded by Stephanie Moore MBE in memory of her husband, the charity backs bowel cancer research and works to raise awareness of the disease.
Peruvian chicken kebabs
- 6 garlic cloves
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 1 tspn of ground cumin
- 1 tspn ground coriander
- 1 tspn sweet paprika
- spray olive oil
- 4 tbsp fresh coriander leaves, half of them chopped
- Juice and grated zest of 3 limes
- 2 large chicken breasts, skinned and cut into 2.5cm cubes
- 5 juicy oranges
- 1 red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 tbsp toasted flaked almonds
- green salad and tortillas, to serve
1 Blitz the garlic and salt to a smooth paste. Remove half and set aside. Add the ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, the whole coriander leaves and half the lime zest and juice, and blend to a paste. Mix the chicken with the spicy garlic paste and allow to marinate for at least 30 minutes.
2 Grate the zest of two and a half oranges, and juice two of them. Combine the orange zest and juice with the remaining lime zest and juice, the onion, the remaining chopped coriander leaves and the remaining garlic paste to make a salsa. Then remove the peel and pith from the remaining oranges, slice the flesh and combine with the garlic salsa.
3 Heat a griddle pan or barbecue. Thread the marinated chicken on to four wooden skewers. Spray the kebabs with olive oil then cook for 12-15 minutes, turning from time to time. Serve with the garlic and orange salsa, green salad, and tortillas.

Diane Harker who manages the market on behalf of Thames Valley Farmers' Market Co-operative says: “The last five years have flown by and the market is better than ever. More and more local people come to the market because they know they can buy genuine local produce with a known provenance.
“We’re very grateful to the Windsor & Eton Town Partnership for all they did to initiate the market and their continuing support for local producers and the local economy. St Leonard’s Road is a good site and we’re established here with other local businesses. I expect we will have a market in Peascod Street on certain occasions, but St Leonard’s Rd is ‘home turf’.”
Cllr Colin Rayner, Lead Member Highways and Streetcare and local farmer welcomes the continuing tradition of a monthly farmers’ market: “This is very much part of the Windsor shopping scene and a welcome attraction for visitors as well as a regular venue for local shoppers. It brings the countryside into Windsor and supports farmers as well as local businesses.”
